While Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air design is drawing global attention, the real breakthrough lies not in its slim profile or compact internal layout—but in its battery.
According to Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of Sila, a company specializing in next-gen battery materials, the iPhone Air introduces a game-changing power source.
“The battery in the new iPhone is truly remarkable. Its 2D design is unlike anything we’ve seen, and up close it’s stunning,” Berdichevsky said, calling it “a true revolution in battery technology,” as reported by TechCrunch.
Berdichevsky knows the stakes—he was Tesla’s seventh employee and led development of the original Roadster battery before founding Sila, which is pioneering silicon anodes for consumer electronics and eventually EVs.
The Tech Secret
The breakthrough comes from Apple’s patented metal-case battery. Unlike conventional soft-shell plastic batteries, this version is encased in a rigid metallic housing that boosts durability, thermal stability, and space efficiency.
This innovation allows Apple to stretch the battery closer to the phone’s edges, maximizing capacity and ensuring more consistent performance.
Berdichevsky predicts the design will become the new industry standard, eventually extending to AR/VR headsets and other compact devices.
Future Potential
Though Apple has not fully implemented silicon anodes yet, the metal-case design lays the groundwork. Silicon can store up to 50% more energy than graphite anodes but struggles with swelling issues—a challenge companies like Sila are actively solving.
